On Oct. 26 The University of Southern Mississippi Jazz Studies Program will present its Fall Concert at 8 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center, featuring world-renowned jazz drummer Carl Allen. This event is free and open to the public.

Throughout Allen’s esteemed career he has worked with the likes of Kenny Garrett, Kirk Whalum, Freddie Hubbard, and Michael Brecker. Along with Jazz Lab 1, he will be playing works by Bob Mintzer, Thad Jones, Bill Mobley and more.

“So often students look for something outside themselves to take them to the next level such as a technique, a method or a better instrument, but Carl shows them it has to come from inside first and that is fortified by listening to and studying the masters,” said Director of Jazz Studies Larry Panella.

With more than 200 recordings to his credit, the gifted New York-based drummer, sideman, bandleader, entrepreneur, and educator has been providing soulful and swinging sounds for nearly three decades.

“Education has always been part of my mission,” said Allen. “Art Blakey taught me the importance of nurturing the next generation of musicians. Every generation needs someone to help them get to the next level and this what I am hoping to do.”

This is another in a long line of talented guest artists to perform with the equally talented Jazz Program at Southern Miss. The program dates back to the early 1950s and alumni have literally circled the globe in programs and performances at all levels. The impact of performing with and learning from such guest artists is not lost on students in the program today.

“I’m floored at the chance to be able to play with someone who played with some of the musicians I still look up to!,” said Judson Wright, a jazz studies major from Madison, Miss. “This is going to be a great show.”
