The March 10, 2022, Simpson County School Board meeting was opened with board comments. Stacey Herrin advised the public anyone with questions or concerns were free to call her.   Mrs. Herrin wants to hear the concerns of the public. Stan Bulger and Stacey both advised the public that the emails the board has received have not gone unnoticed. Bulger advised the responsibility for the board to provide and make sure the students can have the best education possible is their goal.

Magee High School and Mendenhall High School both were recipients of the Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools (PREPS) growth award. A recognition of academic achievement was presented by Dr. Deirdre Randall to Magee High School for showing growth in Algebra I. Kristy Thurman is the teacher.

Mendenhall High School received a certificate for showing growth in Biology I.  Katelyn Foster is the teacher. Mr. Banks Principal at Mendenhall accepted the certificate on her behalf.

The board approved increasing the work days for Assistant Principals from 200 days to 220 days.

The board approved creating a new part-time position of Entry Level Driver Trainer (ELDT) which is being required by the Mississippi Department of Education. MDE is requiring each district to designate a person who can train new drivers on certain standards concerning bus driving.

Covid numbers are down. Students are no longer required to wear mask. The district will monitor the schools after the return from Spring Break for spikes in cases.

Rev. Ralph Walker, President of the p-16 council, updated the board on meetings within the communities. Magee and Mendenhall Schools combined their P-16 councils to have just one council which will report quarterly to the district.

The following consent agenda was approved.

·      Asset Disposals
·      School Bus Turnaround Requests
·      Permission to accept 54 boxes of N95 masks from Simpson General Hospital.
·      Permission to accept bid from Uniti Fiber for WAN services for the 2022-2025 E-Rate funding years.
·      Simpson Central and Magee Middle Cheerleaders and Cheer Sponsors, Taylor Brown and Kitzmet Craft requested permission to attend Cheer Camp, June 2-5th at the University of Southern MS.
·      Permission for Crystal Brewer to attend the ASCA Board of Directors Meeting, April 21-24, 2022 in Alexandria, VA
·      Permission for Mark Hudson and Mendenhall High School Band students (13) to attend State Indoor Guard Championship, April 1-2, 2022, in Oxford, MS
·      Permission for Kimberly McCann and (15) Magee High students to attend the FCCLA State Leadership Conference, March 9-11, 2022, in Jackson.
·      Permission for Misty Hanna to attend the MAFEPD Conference, June 20-24, 2022, in Flowood, MS.
·      Permission for Derricka Thomas, Aquila Grubbs, Annette Johnson, Lynette Barnes, Cynthia Watkins, and Christye Bryant to attend MS School Nutrition Assn Education Seminar, April 5-6, 2022, in Bay St. Louis, MS.
·      16th Section report

1.      Past due lease payments–30 days- William Hall 16-10N-18W

2.     Secretary of State Inspection Reports

3.     Permission to advertise for hunting-fishing bids on 16-1-3 (640                 acres)

·      Uniti-Southern Light

 

Jeffery Walker, Maintenance and Transportation Director, updated the board  the slab for the 5th grade building would be poured in the coming days. The crews will begin working 12 hour shifts 6 days a week starting Monday, March14, 2022, to meet the projected finish date for the 5th grade building at Mendenhall Elementary. Bids will open in the coming weeks for the projects at Simpson Central.

Thomas and Ray Floyd met before the board to express their dissatisfaction with the decision to consolidate the high schools. Each person was given 3 minutes to state their concerns while the board listened and took their statements under advisement.

The biggest changes in HR came from the HR Department. Dr. Robert Sanders HR Director and Assistant Superintendent will be resigning effective June 30, 2022. Tommy Brumfield was named the new principal at Mendenhall Elementary.

Chuck Maxie was named the new Head Coach and AD for Magee High School.
