William G. Cheney, Jr. to serve as Assistant Secretary of State of Lands

Jackson, MS—Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is pleased to announce William “Bill” G. Cheney, Jr. has been promoted to serve as Assistant Secretary of State of Lands.  He has served as Senior Attorney in the Public Lands Division for seventeen (17) years.

“Bill has been an asset to this Agency for the past two decades and has been instrumental in managing and maintaining 16th Section Public School Trust Lands and increasing their revenue for school children,” says Secretary Hosemann. “We are pleased to announce this well-deserved promotion.”

As Assistant Secretary of State of Lands, Bill is responsible for advising the Secretary of State on matters related to public lands, serving as an advocate of the policies of the Secretary of State pertaining to public lands, and drafting legislation related to public lands. He also works with other local, state, and federal agencies on matters pertaining to state lands. Additionally, he will continue to work with local school districts and other parties in the oversight, management and leasing of 16th Section Public School Trust Lands.

“I am honored to accept the position and appreciate the trust Secretary Hosemann has in my abilities to work with school districts in managing their 16th Section Land while working on other public matters as well,” states Bill Cheney.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Bill graduated from Millsaps College with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1985.  He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1988.

Upon his graduation from law school, Bill served as the law clerk for the Honorable Michael Sullivan and the Honorable Edwin Pittman at the Mississippi Supreme Court.  Prior to working for the Secretary of State’s Office, Bill spent ten (10) years in private practice.

Bill currently lives in Jackson with his wife, the former Nancy Bigelow of Columbus, and their two sons, Garner and Gibson.  Bill is actively involved in Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster with Troop 1 sponsored by St. Andrews and St. James Churches.
