Application Deadline is Oct. 11 for $10,000 Scholarship Program

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today reminded Mississippi high school juniors and seniors of an October 11 deadline to apply for the 2020 U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP).

In its 58th year, the USSYP will award two students from Mississippi with an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship.  This year’s program will be March 7-14, 2020.

“Each year the U.S. Senate Youth Program brings some of our nation’s brightest young leaders to Washington for a week of networking and learning,” Wicker said. “I encourage every eligible Mississippian to apply for this special opportunity.”

“This highly respected program offers students a chance to learn more about our democracy and earn a scholarship.  I encourage Mississippi students to apply to be part of a program that will include their peers from across the nation,” said Hyde-Smith.

The USSYP brings the highest-level officials from each branch of government to meet with high school juniors or seniors representing each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity during an intensive, weeklong education and leadership program.

Each delegate will receive a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship and is encouraged to pursue coursework in history and political science.  The Hearst Foundations fully funds this program.

Interested students can visit https://www.ussenateyouth.org/ for more information.  The 2020 Official Program brochure and rules are available here.

The deadline to apply for the USSYP program in Mississippi is October 11, 2019.

Applicants may also contact their high school principal or Mississippi’s state-level selection administrator:

Mississippi’s 2019 USSYP delegates were Ruben Banks of Jackson and Warren Guest of Brandon.
