An Announcement from Whit Hughes

June 19, 2018

Today, I sent my opponent a final letter requesting a debate to be held the evening before Election Day (Monday, June 25). This is my third attempt to arrange a joint appearance with him. On the day after the primary election, I proposed two runoff debates and Michael Guest refused to participate. Since then, I’ve asked my opponent to join me at any and all of my daily, town hall meetings, but Mr. Guest has been unresponsive.

I respect my opponent and I know we can have a civil debate on issues of importance. A runoff debate will allow voters to make an informed decision before they go to the polls. That is why I am continuing to fight for this debate opportunity.

Voters deserve it. Our democratic process deserves it. It is the American way.

I cannot imagine Michael Guest and his team will simply let the clock run out on this opportunity — an opportunity that we, as candidates, owe Mississippians.

I am confident we have plenty of time to work out debate arrangements. I am also certain media members would be happy to broadcast the debate to voters throughout the Third Congressional District. There are many options — talk radio, television, social media via one of our major newspapers, political blogs, etc.

Michael Guest and I are requesting consideration for an extremely important job and I believe the least we can do is “interview” for the job one-on-one, side-by-side on a stage.

I asked for a response by 5:00 pm today so that appropriate arrangements can be made as quickly as possible.
