WCU Theatre presents student-written fantasy, “Legality of a Kiss”

William Carey University Theatre presents an original comedy-fantasy, “Legality of a Kiss,” written by senior English major Corinne Fraley of Roslyn, Penn. As a matter of fact, the play is entirely written, directed, designed, and acted by students.

It will be performed April 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. in Joe & Virginia Tatum Theatre on WCU’s Hattiesburg campus.

“Legality of a Kiss” is the tale of a knight in shining armor presented with a dilemma – whether to kiss, or not to kiss, a sleeping princess cursed by a witch. After all, she’s asleep and can’t give consent. Fraley has taken the traditional “once upon a time” story with princes, princesses, castles, and romantic adventure and complicated matters by involving a legal system and political correctness. In this fairy tale world, fire-breathing dragons are not the only problem.

Here’s a look at the cast:

  • Fox – Avery Johnson of Hattiesburg
  • Lacey – Elissa Colombo of Chester, N.H.
  • Quinton – Zachary Felton of Roxie
  • Art – Joshua Luther of Memphis, Tenn.
  • Vivian – Malayna Knapp of Ocean Springs
  • Agent Jackie – Ana Cazalas of Mobile, Ala.
  • Agent #2 – Madison White of McComb

Jeremiah Quiroz, a theatre major from Picayune, is the director the play under the mentorship of Tim Matheny, chair of the Theatre and Communication Department. Technical director Dewey Douglas of the theatre faculty serves as mentor for student designers:

  • Corrine Fraley, scenic designer
  • Elaina Dunning of Gulfport, costume designer
  • Joshua Luther, lighting designer
  • Malayna Knapp, properties designer
  • Meghan Harries of Oxford, sound designer
  • Mackenzie Charles of McComb, stage manager
  • Caleb Horton of Columbus, technician

The box office is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and one hour before each performance.  Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for senior citizens and military, and $5 for non-WCU students. To reserve tickets, call (601) 318-6221.
