Following an incident at Magee Middle School, I requested a sit down with the Simpson County Superintendent of Education Dr. Paul Lawrence.

I had unanswered questions.

If a fight occurs at one of our schools how are faculty and staff supposed to respond?  “They are to break up the fight.”  As with any situation, good judgement is required.  Dr. Lawrence continually emphasized, “the children are our responsibility…we must keep them safe.”

Magee High School and Middle School as well as Mendenhall have open campus meaning public roads surround the campus as well as public sidewalks.  Dr. Lawrence discussed the difficulty of this situation.  “Years ago, public schools were built in the middle of town…the things we deal with now were not even on our radar,” stated Lawrence.

Why can’t our schools have safety resource officers?  “At the next board meeting, I will be asking for officers at Magee and Mendenhall,” explained Lawrence.

What can happen to a parent who goes on a school campus during school hours?  “This does not need to happen,” said Lawrence.  “Everyone is to visit the office first.” A parent can be charged by the police for entering a campus—especially if they cause problems.

Take time to listen to the interview.  One thing for sure, Dr. Paul Lawrence loves the students.  He wants a safe campus.  He wants to educate your child
