On December 4, 2024, at approximately 12:54 PM, Magee Police Department Dispatchers received a report of a vehicle burglary in the Dollar Tree parking lot. The victim stated she had been approached by a male suspect asking for directions to the nearest hospital. While engaged in conversation with him, she noticed a Hispanic-looking female entering her vehicle and taking her purse. When the victim yelled, the male suspect fled towards AutoZone, and the female suspect ran in the direction of Walgreens, carrying the victim’s wallet.

Magee officers responded swiftly and detained the female suspect near Huddle House. She was identified as Elena Matilda Trifu of Romania. Although Trifu did not have the wallet on her at the time, she later confessed to the theft under Miranda warnings. The stolen wallet was recovered in a trash can at a nearby restaurant’s women’s restroom.

Further investigation revealed that Trifu had outstanding warrants in Canada from Toronto and Quebec for being part of a “criminal organization” and theft exceeding $5,000. She had entered the country illegally with an unknown accomplice. Trifu was arrested, booked, and processed at the Magee Police Department. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on her for further investigation and action.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Thanks to the quick response by Magee officers and investigators, one of the suspects was apprehended, and the victim’s belongings were recovered.

Safety Tips:

• Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Stay alert and pay attention to what’s happening around you, especially if approached by strangers. Criminals often prey on distracted individuals.
• Secure Your Belongings: Always lock your vehicle, even when nearby, and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight.
• Trust Your Instincts: If someone’s behavior feels off or makes you uncomfortable, prioritize your safety. End the interaction politely and leave the area if necessary.
• Report Suspicious Activity: If you see something unusual, contact law enforcement immediately. Prompt reporting allows for swift responses, as demonstrated in this case.

By staying vigilant and proactive, we can work together to prevent similar crimes and ensure the safety of our community.
