The University of Southern Mississippi’s premier community service project will kick off again on Saturday, March 7 when hundreds of students, faculty and staff provide volunteer efforts at various sites throughout the Hattiesburg area as part of The Big Event.
The annual event is a partnership between USM’s Student Government Association and the Center for Community Engagement. Volunteers will be participating in service projects at more than 20 sites, including all Hattiesburg public schools, the Hub City Humane Society, R3SM and The Arc of Southeast Mississippi.
Since 2010, Southern Miss has participated in The Big Event, which is also held at other colleges and universities across the country during which service projects benefiting local communities are undertaken by university volunteers.
Christy Arrazattee, Director of USM’s Center for Community Engagement, notes that approximately 550 volunteers participated in last year’s Big Event. She characterizes the annual collaboration as a true “win-win” for the volunteers and benefactors.
“This event is an opportunity for students to learn more about the great things happening in Hattiesburg and gives them a chance to be a part of it, even if just for a morning,” said Arrazattee. “It’s important for them to realize how we all can be a part of making our community a great place to live.”
