Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Ray Guy joked that he knows “there is one street name I will never forget” after a roadway bearing his name was dedicated on Tuesday, July 28 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

Guy, a former first-team All-American punter at Southern Miss, watched with pride as University workers unveiled “Ray Guy Way” on a signpost fronting the Duff Athletic Center.

“This is a very special day for me, and it would not have been possible without all of you,” Guy told a large gathering of supporters. “It means more to me than you can imagine.”

Following the street dedication, Guy was honored with a retirement reception at the Ogletree House which serves as the home of the University’s Alumni Association. For the past several years, Guy has worked on campus as director of the M-Club – a non-profit organization founded to help promote Southern Miss athletics.

Guy, a native of Swainsboro, Ga., was the first pure punter selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He was taken by the Oakland Raiders with the 23rd-overall pick in the 1973 draft. He played 13 seasons for the Raiders, averaging 42.4 yards per punt during his career. A six-time NFL All-Pro selection, Guy was named the punter on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 2, 2014 during ceremonies in Canton, Ohio.
