USM Center Partners with City for Special 9/11 Day of Service

The Center for Community and Civic Engagement at The University of Southern Mississippi has teamed up with the City of Hattiesburg and other area organizations for a city-wide day of service and outreach called #WeAreHattie on Sept. 11.

The event, which also includes participation from the Greater Pine Belt Community Foundation and Volunteer Hattiesburg, sprang from the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

“The purpose of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is to mobilize more Americans to engage in service and remembrance activities that meet vital community needs and honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, or those who rose in service as result of that tragedy,” said Christy Arrazattee, director of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement.

Area schools, churches, non-profits and private citizens are encouraged to sign up for volunteer opportunities. For example, Elizabeth Winton, director for Volunteer Hattiesburg, notes that a school might sign up to have a fence painted. Or a non-profit could sign up to help bag food for the hungry.

“September 11 is a day no one will forget; so we encourage everyone to ‘put their boots on’ and help a non-profit, your city, or even your neighbor,” said Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree. “Just get out and volunteer.”
