Sixteen U.S. children have died from confirmed cases of flu this season as of January 5, 2019, according to reporting by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The total includes one child from Mississippi who died from influenza in December.
Children are more vulnerable to flu than most adults, and flu protection – including vaccination against the flu – is essential. Last flu season, 80 percent of children who died from the flu were unvaccinated.
Peak flu season is here now, and will persist through February and possibly into March. Getting your flu vaccination now is important since it can take up to two weeks for a flu vaccination to reach its full effectiveness.
