The Transition to a New Chief of Staff
Over the last six months, our office has seamlessly transitioned from the last administration to the new. Much of that credit belongs to our Chief of Staff, Keith Davis, and our Deputy Chief of Staff, Carla Thornhill. About a week or two ago, our office received the bittersweet news of Chief Davis’ resignation. Davis has accepted a position as Deputy Commissioner of Operations with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Anytime a member of our team has an opportunity to do more for Mississippi, we support it wholeheartedly.
Carla Thornhill will serve as the new Chief of Staff for the agency. She is a native of Philadelphia, Mississippi, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History, as well as a Master’s of Social Sciences from Mississippi College. While in college, Carla interned with the Secretary of State’s Office and officially joined the agency in 1997 as the Director of Human Resources. During her time at the agency, Carla has served as Interim Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff.

Rotary Club of Greenville
Yesterday I had the honor of being the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Greenville’s meeting. I genuinely enjoyed how comfortable the crowd was with sharing comments and asking questions. Our conversation covered recent changes to absentee voting, the importance of cleaning up our state’s voter rolls, the 2020 Census, and an overall update on the office. Thank you to everyone for your honesty and hospitality! I look forward to providing another update during my next trip to the Delta. |
Virtual Summer Reading Program
As a father of three beautiful little girls, reading books is a popular activity in our household. When the Itawamba County Library reached out to me about participating in its virtual summer reading program, I jumped at the opportunity. American Patriotism was the theme for the week, so I decided to read Will Marlon Bundo’s “A day in the Life of the Vice President.”

Red Tape Reduction
Throughout my campaign for Secretary of State, I promised to uphold my conservative values and continue fighting for small businesses in our state. Representative Jerry Turner’s HB 1104, which was recently signed into law, allows the Occupational Licensing Review Commission (OLRC) to review and reform existing regulations. The OLRC is composed of the Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General. I’m thankful we can use this as an opportunity to create true economic stimulus in the form of cutting burdensome regulations and licensing laws, thus spurring the growth of small businesses and entrepreneurs in our state.

Virtual Campout with Boy Scouts
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many organizations are relying on programs like Zoom to stay connected. I had the opportunity to join a “virtual campout” with the Boy Scouts from Troop 1 and Troop 2019. We talked about the importance of voting and ways to be a great citizen. It’s always encouraging to visit with youth who have a passion for education and service. It was also an honor to help them check off a requirement for the First Class rank! |
