The current outbreak of measles in 22 U.S. states has reached more than 700 new cases for 2019, higher than any year since 1994. Outbreaks in California, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey and New York are still ongoing.
All the cases involved have been linked to unvaccinated travelers returning from countries where there are currently large measles outbreaks. According to the CDC, these travelers in turn have spread the disease at home, almost always to unvaccinated children. Nearly one in 10 measles cases in 2019 have resulted in hospitalization.
Make sure you are vaccinated against measles before traveling internationally: If you are planing to travel, make sure that you and your family have been protected by the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine before you leave the country. Check with your doctor or a county health department’s immunization records to find out your vaccination status.
