Troy Carroll Greer passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS. He was born on January 27, 1935, in Simpson County, MS, to Will Ross Greer and Stella Sullivan Greer.
He was a graduate of Mendenhall High School Class of 1954. During his senior year, the 1953-54 football team won the Little Dixie Championship with an undefeated record. After graduation, Troy joined the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College and was a member of the CoLin Wolves football team, serving as captain in 1957. After graduation, he transferred to Delta State University, where he played football for two years and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1960. He received a master’s degree from Mississippi College in 1965 and later earned a guidance counseling degree.
Troy began his coaching career at Liberty High School in Liberty, Mississippi, as an assistant coach. He also coached at Mendenhall High School, Brandon High School, and Magee High School. In between coaching jobs, he did construction insulation work. In 1976-80, he was Simpson County Superintendent of Education, returning to coaching, teaching, and counselor until 1992, when he was again elected Superintendent of Education for Simpson County.
In addition to his professional career, Troy served as a Mendenhall Alderman for twelve years. In 2007, he was voted into the CoLin Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2016, he was voted into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame.
Troy was ordained as a deacon at Mendenhall First Baptist Church in 1963 and served as a Sunday school teacher.
In his free time, Troy enjoyed studying the Bible, squirrel hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a collector of antique farm equipment and proudly displayed it on his property on Strong River.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Stella Greer; infant daughter, Leslie Sue; son, Troy Kyle; sisters, Dorothy Nettles, Fannie Lee Baker, and Joyce Roberts; and brothers, Wilford Greer and Billy Greer.
Troy is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mildred; son, Kelly Greer; granddaughters, Macy Kate McClellan (Drew) and Maggy Kyle Greer.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Tutor Funeral Home, 3035 Hwy 13 S, Mendenhall, MS, from 10:00 am until 1:00 PM. The service will begin at 1:00 PM with Bro. Robert Sones and Bro. Jay Wesbrooks officiating. Interment will follow in Mendenhall City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Kyle Greer Memorial Endowment at The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation, 118 College Drive #5210, Hattiesburg, MS 39406.
