TROJANS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST HAZLEHURST 27-16
Magee High School faced a very big and athletic Hazlehurst team Friday night on Trojan Field. The Indians were undefeated and ranked inside the top 5 in most 3A polls. The Trojans would dig a big hole in the first half going down 21-0 before fighting back. The young men wearing the Red and Gray refused to quit. Here are the highlights.
Errors and mental mistakes by the Trojans combined with big plays by the Indians resulted in the big first half deficit. With time running out in the first half, the Trojans would begin their comeback. After Gavin Drones broke up a pass on a 4th down play for the Indians, the Trojans offense would come to life. Passes from Tristan Newsome to Kyerston Tucker and Demichael Green set up the Trojans with a first and goal at the Indians 7-yard line. The Trojans would stall and Gavyn Chafin’s field goal would give Magee their first points of the night. The first half would end with Magee trailing 21-3.
The Magee Defense came out determined in the second half and forced a three and out. Trojans began to move the ball, but a penalty led to a punt. The Indians would be called for roughing the punter giving new life to the Trojans. Braeden Gregory would give the home team the momentum it needed as he burst through the Indians defense for a 47-yard touchdown run. The PAT by Chafin was good and the lead was cut to 21-10. A great kickoff and coverage by the Trojans pinned the Indians at their own 16-yard line. Delarious Hayes and Tylan Benson would blow up the Indians running back on first down and then the defense would force another three and out. After the punt, Magee would take over on the visitors’ 38-yard line. After another false start penalty, Gregory would again explode for a 43-yard touchdown run. It appeared to be a touchdown but it was marked short on the 1-yard line. Kendal Middleton would punch it in for Magee. The PAT was blocked, but the Trojans had fought back and were down only 21-16. The defense would again give the ball back to the Trojans and they looked poised to take the lead. However, the Indians would force the first Trojan punt in the second half and would take over at their own 30. On a run the Indians QB, the Trojans would be called for a facemask and personal foul. It set Hazlehurst up inside the red zone. On a fourth and goal from the 2-yard line, the Indians would score but the Trojans would stop the 2-point conversion. The Indians were up 27-16. That would be the final score.
It would have been easy to quit after being down 21-0 to one of the top teams in 3A. These Trojans are growing, but need to cut out the costly mistakes. It doesn’t get any easier. They face the top ranked team in 3A, the Raleigh Lions, at home this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Senior football players, band members and cheerleaders will be honored pregame. Families of the seniors have been asked to be at the field at 6:00 p.m. These young men and women have worked hard to represent their school and city. If you haven’t been to game this year, make your way to Trojan Field on Friday night. Let’s get behind the Trojans!
