It is with great sadness that the family of Travis McCallum announces his death on March 26th, 2015 at age 82 after a short battle of pneumonia.
A lifelong resident of Mize, MS Mr. Travis was active until the last two weeks of his life.
He was born June 29th, 1932 to Walter Scott and Alice McCallum at the old McCallum farm home near Calvary Baptist Church near Mize. Shortly after graduating from Mize high School he married his wife of 59 years, Mary Virginia Sumrall. He was then drafted and served in the Korean War for three years. Upon discharge he was employed with Life of Georgia Insurance Company where he worked as a salesman for twenty-two years. After retirement his life was spent farming his beloved garden where he found great pride in growing crops, especially watermelons and tomatoes. He also spent a great amount of time raising and tending to his animals in which he allowed his grand and great-grandchildren to enjoy in assisting him. His happiest moments were always spent on the front porch of his home where he could be found always accompanied by his family and friends. Mr. Travis is best remembered as a one of-a-kind character who always loved telling an old story.
He was preceded in death by both parents, Scott and Alice McCallum; wife Virginia McCallum; Sister Ola Grace Jones; Brother Walter Hugh McCallum and son-in-law Dennis Strausser. He is survived by Brother L.D. McCallum and with Dorothy of Magee; Sister Billie Rose Jones of Taylorsville; daughter Rhonda Sullivan and husband Prentiss of Mize; daughter Elise Strausser of Center Ridge; son Travis McCallum Jr. (Buddy) of Mize; daughter Rene Jordan and husband Randy Jordan of Mize; daughter Melissa McBride and husband Todd of Taylorsville. Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren: Priscilla Howell, Sheree Hester, Evan Sullivan, Jessica Jordan, Allison Graves, Barrett Howell, Mitchell Jordan, Laken McBride, Brooks Howell, Dawson McBride, Payton and Paige Hester, Jaxon Guillory and Gatlin McBride
They request visitation to be observed on Friday March, 27 from 5-8pm at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee and graveside memorial on 2:00pm at The Mize City Cemetery.
