Thurman, Rutland named to All-Mississippi Academic Team

PEARL, Mississippi – Copiah-Lincoln Community College sophomores Deborah Thurman of Mount Olive and Joshua Rutland of Collins were recently named to the All-Mississippi Academic Second Team.

Forty-eight Mississippi community and junior college students have been named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team. The All-Mississippi Academic Team recognizes the scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of community and junior college students across the state of Mississippi. The Team was recognized recently at a luncheon held at the Muse Center in Pearl. The program is coordinated by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges, and the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.

Each college is eligible to nominate two transfer-bound students and two workforce-bound students per campus for this recognition. The nomination application includes a letter of recommendation, and student assessments from faculty, staff and community leaders who have worked directly with the nominee. Student must also write an essay, answer discussion questions, list leadership roles and activities completed while attending the two-year college, and present a transcript of all coursework completed. Nominations are evaluated on such criteria as effective writing skills, academic rigor of each student’s program of study, and leadership impact at the college and in the community. All team members will receive special medallions, certificates and printed resolutions from the Mississippi.

In addition, nominees may have the opportunity to receive recognition through the All-State Academic Team program, designed to provide the same type of recognition as the national teams, only on a state level.

Thurman is a member of Beta Xi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the Student Government Association and the Bible Club. She is the daughter of Darlyn and Ray Thurman.

Rutland is president of the Beta Xi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and a member of the archery team. His is the son of David and Linda Rutland.
