Dear Simpson Countians:
Many have been asking me what we are planning regarding Simpson County School facilities since we voted to rescind consolidation and keep local schools at Mendenhall and Magee. We now have a plan, thanks to our Superintendent, Dr Robert Sanders. Dr Sanders has had his “boots on the ground” since taking office and has been spending much time on the campuses, particularly at Mendenhall. The Mendenhall campus was the main concern since the Jr High had been moved from the historical location. Dr Sanders reported to us in our regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday 9-9 that he has determined that Mendenhall campus is not overcrowded. He has recommended we put three classrooms in the old band hall and get rid of the mobile units that were purchased when the Jr High was moved.
Dr Sanders also recommended that we build an addition at the CTEC so we cam renew the diesel mechanic course. When the District had the opportunity to start an HVAC program (which has been a wonderful thing) the HVAC was put in the shop where diesel mechanics was taught. The plan is to move the HVAC to the new addition at the CTEC and put diesel mechanics back in their original shop.
Dr Sanders’ plan also includes some much needed roof repairs and HVAC upgrades and a security fence around the Mendenhall campus.
There are some other small details in the plans, but these are the main points. The good news is the District has enough money in our 3 mill note account and our 16th section interest account to accomplish this plan.
The Board voted 5-0 to proceed with Dr Sanders recommendations.
I applaud Dr Sanders for his hard work and common sense approach to our needs!
Sincerely,
Thomas Ray Floyd/District 3 School Board Rep
