They never forget
And I don’t think they truly realize what their remembrance means to me.
In those early days of grief, I did everything I could to find peace—read every book, studied every article, attended every meeting. While none of it cured the pain—because there is no cure—I did gain understanding.
One of the deepest fears after losing a child is that no one will remember. That your child will fade from the world. Be forgotten. That no one will care.
But every year, Larkin’s class reminds me that his memory is still very much alive. They remember him—and show it with the beautiful flowers I receive on the anniversary of his death.
If you know someone who has lost a child—and you know the date—reach out. It doesn’t have to be flowers. A call, a message, even a few words can mean everything.
To Larkin’s sweet friends:
I adore you. I treasure your friendship more than you will ever know.
My grandmother used to say, “Life is like a mountain highway.”
She was right. The ups and downs are tough. Sometimes the road is so steep, you don’t even want to keep going.
But we must. And we do.
