“The Sword of the Lord”

I have fond memories from my childhood that are triggered by things that happen today. I was reading in Hebrews and came across the verse describing God’s word as “sharper than any two edged sword”. Daddy read and studied a lot of books in addition to the Bible as he prepared his sermons and one periodical that he read faithfully was a biweekly newspaper entitled “The Sword of the Lord”. It was first published on September 28, 1934, in Dallas, Texas by Dr. John R. Rice. After Daddy died we found many of his copies of the paper filed in his desk; they had been read, studied and used to prepare messages for his radio broadcast and Sunday sermons.

Churches are diminishing, homes are broken apart, children are abused and neglected, and we have an epidemic of addiction as people search for answers in the wrong things. We have abandoned our principles for Popularity, our convictions for political correctness and convenience, and then we wonder why our nation and our lives are in such a mess! We are drawn away from God’s word by “feel good” psycho-babble, activities instead of worship, and 3 minute-devotions instead of deep study of the scriptures. God’s word is powerful and can bring the sweetest peace, but God’s word should also pierce our hearts and convict us of our sins. As illustrated in the title of the newspaper from long ago, God’s word is truly a two edged sword! We have problems that can only be fixed when we totally yield ourselves to God’s will for our lives. We should be broken hearted about the sin in our lives and our homes and our nation; broken hearted and broken spirited enough to cry out for God to pierce our hearts and mend our brokenness. We must be “broken and spilled out” before God can heal us and our nation!!!!

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
(Hebrews 4:12-13)
