The spirit of giving freely is a Christian virtue

The Scriptural passage selected for today is found in Deuteronomy 15:7-8: “If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your poor brother. Rather be open-handed and freely lend him whatever he needs.” The spirit of giving freely is a Christian virtue and one we’re asked to practice without hope of recompense. There were no government programs to assist the poor in ancient times or in Christ’s day. God’s chosen were urged and expected to assist the truly needy among them, and they would, in turn, be given in like measure as they had given. The BIBLE tells us that the Lord loves a cheerful giver; therefore, let us not be stingy with the bounty we have been given. Let us reach out and help those less fortunate. One of my favorite lines from the 1920’s song “Six Feet of Earth” states, “A cup of cold water in charity given is remembered with joy in the sky.” Amen!

Role models can be positive or negative.

Don’t put a lot of concern into what others think of you.
