In the early 1960’s, Lee’s Rexall Drug Store began selling the most amazing thing I’d ever seen, an aluminum Christmas tree. Mr. Myron & Miss Dot sold one to just about everyone in town. I’d lay on the living room floor & listen to the hum of the color wheel as it changed from red to yellow, blue then green. After supper I’d beg mama to ride me around so I could see which color the neighbor’s tree was as we passed. Miss Mildred’s tree was green, Miss Frances’ was red, Miss Mary Rube’s was blue. Today when I finished the tree, I soaked in the sound of the color wheel & the changing colors. It felt like a 60’s Christmas, as I stood in my retro store. I began to miss that little girl who loved colored aluminum foil, I missed that mama who also secretly loved it just as much, & I missed the way it felt to ride in a 60’s Chevrolet. If you loved it too, be my guest & drive to my store. Pull right up to the front door. Sit a spell & soak it up. If you notice a woman laid out underneath it, don’t be alarmed. It’ll be me or Geraldine Merrell. As a child, the aluminum tree meant the same to her: Christmas!!
