The JV Saints Honor the Freshmen

By: Melissa Grace

Thursday night marked not only the last JV football game of the season, but the freshman recognition. Prior to the game all 9th grade players, cheerleaders and drill team members were greeted on the field by their parents and recognized for their time and efforts at Prentiss Christian.

The PCS Saints hosted district opponent Sylva Bay of Bay Springs. PCS won the toss and elected to receive first. The opening kickoff was downed on the 36 yard line by Daniel Magee. Jacob Anderson and Wade Watkins teamed up on the ground to move the ball out to the 41, but a failed 4th down attempt turned the ball over to SBA at the 45 yard line. Seven plays later, Sylva Bay found the end zone on a 6 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good and the Saints trailed 6-0 with 2:02 to play in the 1st quarter. The SBA kickoff was taken by Kade Greenlee and returned 17 yards to the PCS 36 yard line. With help from Magee, Watkins found the end zone for the Saints seven plays later on a 4 yard touchdown run. Anderson’s 2pt conversion pass to Greenlee missed and the game was knotted at 6 early in the 2nd quarter. Watkins boomed a kickoff 51 yards to the SBA 9 yard line. The tackle was made after a 10 yard return at the 19 by Zac Cole. After gaining only 4 yards on the drive, the SBA Saints elected to punt back to PCS. Watkins fielded the punt at the 49 yard line of PCS and returned it to the 49 of SBA. Seven runs later, Anderson hit Watkins on a 23 yard pass for touchdown. Watkins added the 2pt conversion giving Prentiss a 14-6 lead with 49 seconds left in the 1st half. The Saints kicked off to Sylva Bay who returned the ball up to the Saint 40 yard line, but a horse collar penalty moved the ball to the PCS 45 yard line. SBA worked down to the 17 yard line, but time expired on the half.

Prentiss kicked off to open the 2nd half. Unfortunately, SBA returned the kick 78 yards for a quick touchdown. The 2pt conversion tied the game at 14 very early in the 3rd quarter. Greenlee fielded the SBA kickoff at the 17 yard line and returned it to the 33 to start the next offensive series for Prentiss. Four plays later, Anderson again found Watkins. This time it was a 58 yard touchdown pass, but the 2pt conversion failed giving PCS a 20-14 lead with 6:00 to play in the 3rd quarter. Watkins kickoff was returned well again deep into PCS territory. With only 7 yards to go, SBA wasted no time finding the end zone and adding the 2pt conversion. Sylva Bay jumped ahead 22-20 at the 5:03 mark in the 3rd quarter. Magee would take the ensuing kickoff 17 yards to the Saints 37 to begin the next series for PCS. The Saints lost a yard on the drive and called on Greenlee to punt the ball away. Greenlee’s punt went out of bounds on the SBA 43 yard line. It took Sylva Bay 11 plays, but on 3rd and long they connected on a 20 yard touchdown pass. The 2pt conversion was good giving SBA a 30-20 lead with 6:15 to play in the game. Following a 3 yard kickoff return by Anderson, PCS started the next drive on the Saints 27 yard line. On 2nd down, Anderson was intercepted giving SBA the ball on the Saints 45 yard line. Sam Sanders, Jerod Dungan, Chase Riley and Hunter Bolin dug in on the Saints defensive line and forced a turnover on downs at the PCS 17 yard line. The PCS offense used every second on the clock to move the ball down the field In hopes of a quick comeback, but SBA intercepted the Saints pass on the SBA 15 yard line. Prentiss finished 3-3 on the season which was an accomplishment considering there were only 13 players on this year’s team.
