Policemen are called for just about everything…a coon is in my yard…fighting in the streets…can’t control my children…shoplifters…speeding…roadblocks…killings…murders…

Flat tire…. car won’t start…child locked in car…car wrecks…I’ve fallen and can’t get up…drunk driver…reckless driving… the list goes on and on.  But, I do think Dusty Drennan “landed” a most unusual case this week.  The “situation” actually began last week, but when Dusty reported for duty on Monday, he inherited this case which took him on an emotional roller-coaster.

A missing dog…a found dog…dog gone…

Rocky, a boxer, seems to be a traveling dog.  His life began in McComb, took him to Jackson…Ocean Springs…back to Magee…lost and back again to Magee.  What is unusual about Rocky’s road trips is where and how the journey ended.

Rocky was picked up on Kennedy Drive in Magee in bad shape.  The person took the dog to the vet who did a scan on the dog for a chip.  (Chips are placed under the skin of dogs to assist in their recovery if lost.)  Sure, enough, the vet got a hit.  The chip company would not give any information to anyone but the owner….leaving the vet and “keeper” in the dark.  The “keeper” took the dog to the Magee PD.  The dispatcher made a post on FB  (Magee PD page).   Someone saw a post on Face Book about a missing Boxer.  Melissa Rogers saw the post and contacted the Magee PD.  Melissa had ended up with the dog when Rocky ran away from Connie in September.  In the meantime, one of Connie’s friend saw the same Magee PD FB post and contacted   Connie Lee who was thrilled.  Her son Gavin’s missing dog was found…so she thought!

Gavin suffers from a kidney disease and his mother had begun training “Rocky” to be a medical alert dog for her son.  Connie had worked for months with the dog…lots of time and effort…so getting Rocky back was a huge relief to Connie and help for Gavin….but the story doesn’t end here…

The actual owner of Rocky lives in McComb…and their ten-year-old son had been missing his dog since April.  Legally, Rocky belonged to the family in McComb.

Dusty comes back in the picture!  Dusty is instructed to pick up the dog for the McComb family.  When Dusty arrives at the Lee home, only Gavin is there…with his dog.  Dusty had no choice but to take the dog….ok, by now Dusty is feeling like the bad guy…Gavin is crying…and then Dusty is crying.  Talk about an awful situation, Dusty was fully into an emotional web.

Dusty decided he would find Gavin a dog.

Dusty contacts his wife Ree who immediately goes to Face Book with a plea for a Boxer that looks like Rocky.  About the same time, a man in Taylorsville has learned he will have to get rid of his dog (Boxer) because of a move.  Friends on FB send messages back and forth about the Taylorsville Dog.  Ree talks with the Taylorsville man and learns his dog looks a lot like Rocky.  “Chevy” (the Taylorsville dog) is about 11 months old.  Ree and “Chevy” owner talked…and a deal is struck Tuesday night.

Dusty, Ree and sons Dawsan and Devan head to Taylorsville to get Chevy.  Well, Chevy’s owner is very emotional about having to give up his dog…so again…tears.

At 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Connie and Gavin come to the Magee Police Department to meet Chevy.

I was on hand for the emotional meeting!  I don’t know who shed the most tears!

Don’t ever think Dusty Drennan doesn’t have a heart…he has got a big heart…a soft heart…and a loving heart.  Dusty was determined Gavin would have a dog…a dog that looked like Rocky.

Dusty got a dog that looks like Rocky but…and this is a big but…the dog is not trained for medical alerts!  Dusty’s mission is raising enough money to have Chevy trained to meet Gavin’s medical needs.

Accounts have been established at all Simpson County area Banks. Donations are needed.  Anyone who is willing to assist in the project is asked to make the donation at a local bank.

If this story is confusing, don’t worry…I was so confused with the story of how a McComb dog ended up in Magee…and how a Taylorsville dog ended up in Magee!  I kept asking and asking Dusty questions!  As with most stories, there is no easy way to explain the finding of a home for a lost loved animal.

A Christmas miracle for Gavin Lee made possible by a Magee Policeman with a heart….let’s continue the giving story by donating to the Gavin Lee Fund…and show our hearts!

Pictured with “Chevy” are the Drennans…Dusty, Ree, Dawson & Devan, Police Chief Randy Crawford, and Connie & Gavin Lee

Again, go by any of the banks in Simpson County and make the donation to the Gavin Lee Fund
