This weekend, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles were looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since the 2019 season. The Eagles traveled to Monroe, Louisiana to take on the ULM Warhawks in a heated Sun Belt West matchup. With a win, USM would be able to head to their first bowl since 2019, which would also be 2nd-year head coach Will Hall’s first bowl appearance, and the Eagles’ 25th. A loss for the Eagles would mean they would have to wait for 2023 for a shot at a bowl game. In front of a crowd of only 4,465 fans, the Eagles showed off against the Warhawks, with their best offensive game of the season, totaling 448 yards. With this 20-10 win over ULM, Southern Miss now waits for a bid to a 2022 bowl game.
In the Southeastern Conference, rivalries run deep. From the Iron Bowl to Tennessee and Vanderbilt, rivalries nearly decide the fate of each team in the SEC every season. One of the biggest and most unpredictable however is the one between Ole Miss and Mississippi State, otherwise known as the “Egg Bowl.” Every year these two teams meet in either Oxford or Starkville as they fight for the “Golden Egg.” Throughout history, interesting things have happened at the Egg Bowl such as 1983 when Ole Miss won 24-23 when MS State kicker Artie Cosby missed a 27-yard field goal when what seemed to be a straight kick, was suddenly ruined by a 40 mph wind gust at Memorial Stadium in Jackson. Another notable game was the 2018 matchup now dubbed “The Egg Brawl,” when players from the Rebels and Bulldogs became engulfed in a large brawl that resulted in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for every player on both teams. This year, however, things were much more peaceful as the Bulldogs traveled to Oxford to win their first Egg Bowl since 2019, and they were able to do so after a failed 2-point conversion from Ole Miss to tie the game. Mississippi State took the Golden Egg home after topping the #20 Rebels 24-22.

The only Mississippi team that has a game this week is 11-0 Jackson State who will face the 7-4 Southern Jaguars in the SWAC Championship on December 3, at Mississippi Memorial Veterans Stadium in Jackson. Delta State finishes their season 11-2.
