The “halls” were alive at the Simpson County Tech Center with businesses and colleges showcasing their wares to the students of Simpson County.
The 2016 Tech Center Career Day offered the students a variety of “what lies before them.” I had a great day touring the event…and becoming even more impressed with out Tech Center.
Under the direction of Coach Bo Huffman and Carol Ann Drake, the day provided students with information about colleges, jobs, and careers.
Upon entering the building, Lisa Herrin of UMC School of Health Related Programs was ready to assist students who were interested in any of the UMC programs available. Heather Sophia of WLBT was next in line with information about a career in television. Our Magee and Mendenhall Police Department were on hand to discuss a law enforcement career.
Katie Beth Walton, cooperate recruiter of Sanderson Farms, explained summer internship programs available through the company—plus making a career with Sanderson Farms. Copiah-Lincoln Community was well represented by Lane Flynt, PN Instructor, Laurie Gambell, Lenora Magee, and Sonya Sims the CTE Advisor/Counselor. Sanoy McAllister and Shannon Sandridge of the MS State Fire Academy had a great display and film explaining details of the fire academy. Joel Thomas and Gene represented Stribling Equipment and Empire Truck. Joel talked to me on the growth of Stribling and the number of people in our area employed at Stribling. Blake Benton represented the Mississippi Ag Company. The Army and National Guard were available to share information with students. Magee Hospital was represented by Jessica Jensen. Shannon Welch and Teresa Bowen were available to talk money…Peoples Bank! A representative of USM was on hand for Eagle Talk…and promoting a 4-year college only about an hour away! I missed the names of several displays due to a mass of students checking out the businesses!
What a great day for our students! I appreciated the businesses and colleges who made the effort and cared enough to assist students in making decisions about their life!
Of course, I had to quiz Coach Bo and Carol Ann about the Tech Center! Did you know that Simpson County home school students can attend the Tech Center? I didn’t. Did you know that Magee, Simpson Academy, and Mendenhall students attend the Tech Center? I didn’t! Did you know that the Tech Center is just not for students who do not plan to attend a 4-year college? I didn’t! The Tech Center is a path for any student to discover. The opportunity to learn additional technical information…the opportunity to visit colleges…the opportunity to visit businesses….these are just a few of the programs that await a student who attends the Simpson County Vo Tech Center.
