Jackson, Miss.—The Secretary of State’s Office is releasing $196,876.83 today to Hinds County, and cities and schools within the county, representing proceeds from recent tax-forfeited property sales.  This represents the return of 228 parcels to the tax rolls.

“These funds are in addition to the more than $414,000 we distributed in November 2017, and the more than $2.45 million distributed in the last four years,” Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann told the Hinds County Board of Supervisors this morning at their regularly scheduled meeting. “Every penny counts for our schools and county and municipal governments, but the best news is we have hundreds of parcels returning to productive use in our communities.”

Most of the parcels sold were within the city limits of Jackson; thus, the city and Jackson Public Schools will receive about 67 percent of the total raised.  The remaining funds will be distributed in varying amounts to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, Chancery Clerk, and Sheriff; the City of Clinton, the Clinton School District, and the town of Edwards.

In recent years, successful auctions in Bay St. Louis, Hancock County, McComb, Meridian, Pearl River County, Rankin County, Waveland, Vicksburg, Washington County, and Yazoo City have raised millions of dollars for Mississippi schools, municipalities, and counties.

Since Fiscal Year 2015, the State has turned over more than $2.45 million in tax-forfeited property sales revenue to Hinds County, and cities and schools within the county.  This represents 2,084 parcels.

“The work cannot end here,” Secretary Hosemann said. “We still have 2,500 properties on the State’s inventory in Hinds County.  We are open for businesses and invite the public to take a look and make an offer.”

Any member of the public may view details about available properties throughout the State, including parcel location and pictures, on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.ms.gov/Public-Lands/Pages/Tax-Forfeited-Lands.aspx.  For more information, call the Public Lands Division at (601) 359-5156.
