The April 7, 2025 , Board of Supervisors meeting was called to order by Board President Danny Craft.  Supervisor District 4, Donny Welch, led in prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

In the absence of Chancer Clerk Tim Gray, Attorney Danny Welch presented Gray’s report.

Several request from the Simpson County School Board for bus turnarounds were presented.  Many of the forms were incomplete lacking dates and signatures.  The Board tabled the motion until additional information could be obtained.

Justice Court Clerk Joyce Hicks presented the first quarter report.

Greg Bonds

 

County Engineer Greg Bonds reported that work is continuing Poplar Springs Road (6 miles).  Money available will pave ½ of the road.  Mr. Bonds continues to amass information for collection on the damaged road.  Bonds reported that highway 540 is not a state aid road.

 

Jeremy Bolton, county road manager, gave the following report:

Refuse trailer has arrived

Both Day Cabs have been delivered

Transfer asset #2282 from Solid Waste to the Road Department (International Day Cab)

The Jeff Martin auction will be held May 16th.

A demi and one solid waste trailer are scheduled for auction.

Sintra McLaurin CDL for new hire

Guard rail damaged on Siloam Road (collision)

Harrisville/Braxton Road received storm damage

State Aid Harrisville Braxton Bridge received storm damage

Two quotes were received for the 540/Jupiter base repair with Walters receiving the lowest bid:

Total labor:  $69,260.00

Total cost is estimated at $150,000,00 which does not include fog seal or striping.

Motion was requested to address the pothole situation in the front parking lot.  Additional information was needed.

Request to rent two half ton trucks form Herc Rental on State contract (one for solid waste and one for road department at $1,455.00 a month.

Caterpillar 320 Excavator buy back is due in May.  Guaranteed from Pucket is $105,000 or JM Wood @ $107,500 (with completed repairs). A new machine is $245,000.00. Motion was made to advertise for bids on new machine.

Cato Road culvert change was complete—thanks to the Sheriff and his department for controlling traffic.

Tax assessor Jamie Brewer announced Homestead complete.  (493 new application and 6250 total)

Solid waste report and surrender tags for March was presented.  Tyson has requested a tax exemption.  Additional information is needed before the request can be approved.  Larry Sparks new hire.  Information concerning the Hazard Waste Day will be presented when information received.

County Administrator Eric Bowen’s report:

Attorney Danny Welch informed the board a request has been made for a cemetery located near Simpson County Lake.   The original request was to name the cemetery the Holloway Family Cemetery.   The family has now requested naming the cemetery the Holloway Rankin Family Cemetery.  The matter is under advisement.

A representative from AMR requested use of a office area where AMR is located.  Questions arose concerning if the office area was already in use.  The board tabled the matter but agreed to seek an area for AMR office.

The meeting was adjourned for Executive session.
