Since I’ve been at college, I’ve been trying to adjust to life 80 miles from home. Poplarville is a great little town and it’s a lot like Magee. But there is not much to do here in Poplarville. But this weekend, I got to experience something that showed me how much more Poplarville is like Magee.
In 2019, the city of Poplarville hosted its first annual “Sweet Mississippi Tea Festival,” a festival hosted in the town square, where around 70 booths are set up selling homemade products, food, and good old sweet tea. Musical acts line the day up keeping people entertained while they try and judge different types of sweet tea from all over the state. When it came time for the festival in 2020, it had to be canceled due to COVID-19. It was also canceled in 2021 for the same reasons.
But in 2022, the festival was back in full swing. I attended the festival last Friday (the 7th) on its first day just to get a glimpse of what it was, and I found it is a lot like the Crazy Day festival we have in Magee. And I met a few vendors who will be at Crazy Day this year; some will be there for their first year, and others will return from multiple past years.
The Sweet Mississippi Tea Festival and Crazy Day are two great ways to get out and see what your community has to offer. Not just your own town as a community, but your county and state too. You find things such as homemade door hangers, BBQ, and “fair” foods, and where at Crazy Day we judge cars and trucks, the Sweet Tea Festival judges sweet tea recipes from all across the Pine Belt.
Crazy Day will be on October 22 in Magee. I hope to y’all there for a day of food, music, antique vehicles, and fun for everyone.
