Mississippi Supreme Court Presiding Justice Michael K. Randolph of Hattiesburg is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery Nov. 14. Presiding Justice Randolph, 69, expects to fully return  to his duties at the court in mid-January after recuperating at home.
His absence from the court will not delay the resolution of any cases on appeal. Work is ahead of schedule on all cases assigned to him. He will continue to work on court cases in Jackson and from home through Nov. 11.
Cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Robert J. Robbins of the Hattiesburg Clinic is scheduled to perform the surgery. The surgery is to repair two leaking heart valves. The need for surgery was discovered after Presiding Justice Randolph recently began experiencing difficulty breathing. It will be his second open heart surgery.  He underwent triple bypass surgery in 2006.
He exercises regularly and is an avid bicyclist. He rode between 12 and 34 miles a day before the symptoms appeared.
“I have a very positive outlook about where I’m headed,” Presiding Justice Randolph said.
He expects to seek another term on the court. His current term ends in four years.
