The April 15, 2024, Simpson County Board of Supervisors was called to order by Board President Mitchell Chatman followed by prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. All board members were present.
The R. J Young contract for the youth court service office was approved.
Road manager Ben Warren explained “you just can’t fix this stuff” as he explained the need for a lease program for heavy equipment. “The lease will allow when a machine goes down…another one is brought.” Supervisor Wayne Womack requested a proposal to be presented at the next meeting to weigh the pros and cons. Warren stated the importance of safety lights on all trucks. “The traffic is unreal…without proper lights, we are at a safety risk,” said Warren.
Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer said homestead sign up has ended and 6,223 people qualified which included 250 new signees.
Daniel Parker of Community Connections located in Hattiesburg came before the board to promote the nonprofit organization. Mr. Parker invited the Supervisors to a two day seminar in Hattiesburg on July 18 & 19 to learn more about renewable energy and programs that are available for the public. Supervisor Danny Craft suggested Mr. Parker visit Pat Brown of the Simpson County Development and share the information with Brown.
Sheriff Paul Mullins requested for Janiya Mackey dispatch to attend IAED 40 hour basic May 6-10 at Copiah County at no cost. The Board approved.
Charlie Welch announced progress is being made at the Court House with the leak in the District Attorney’s office. The leak has been pin-pointed and scheduled for repair. The new Trustee Hall has not closed out but is occupied. 877 work orders with 90% completion according to Welch.
The Board reminded Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer she does have the right under law to suspend delinquent accounts as well as placing a lean on the property.
Jeremy Bolton, Road Department, reported 5 members of the road crew have passed the driving course at Co-Lin. Problems with log trucks tearing up the road is on going. Supervisor Donny Welch said, “we must regulate logging.” “There are good loggers in our county,” explained Welch, “the others make the problems.” Proof of insurance is a requirement. Bolton said policies need to be made for our employees. Cell phone use, drugs and alcohol were mentioned for regulation.
Mr Burkhalter appeared before the board concerning solid waste disposal for Air South (which he is in charge). Presently, about two loads a week or disposed of. Burkhalter was requesting use of the county rubbage pit which he will pay a fee. Mr Burkhalter and road management will continue devising a plan.
The Board adjourned for an executive session.
