The first order of business during the Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting was to conduct a hearing on proposed Ad Valorem Tax Revenue Increase and Tax Levy Rate Decrease for Fiscal Year 2024 and proposed budget and proposed tax levies for the physical year 2024. Attorney Danny Welch verified Proof of Publication.

 

During the hearing, the board heard from concerned citizens. Thomas Ray Floyd spoke before the board voicing his objection to the school board increase. Mr. Floyd pleaded with the board to reject the increase. After the board heard from all concern citizens, a vote was conducted. The proposed budget was approved with a 5-0 vote.

The board recorded in their minutes exemptions certification of MS Department of Revenue for Vestra, LL, Real Pure Bottling, LLC, and Howard Industry for AD Valorem Tax Exemptions.

 

Emergency Manager John Kilpatrick advised fire departments have been very busy within with county fighting grass fires due to the drought. Again, Kilpatrick reminded the public Simpson County is still under a burn ban and no burning of any type is allowed. Anyone caught burning could be fined. The county is averaging 3-4 grass fires a day.

A total of 1063 911 calls were received through dispatch for the month of August. The county had 6 structure fires where an individual received burns retrieving children from a burning home. No one was serious injured in the fire. All children were removed from the burning home safely.

 

Sheriff Mullins requested to move Marli Thornton who is full time dispatch to part time dispatch. Mullins requested to attend the 2023 Mississippi Sheriff’s Winter Conference on December 4-8, 2023, at the Golden Nugget in Biloxi, MS. The request  was approved which will cover hotel, meals and travel.

 

The following bridges have been ordered closed after inspections have been completed.

  • Deer Camp Road
  • New Hoep Road
  • David Sherman Road
  • Hwy 472

 

The bridge located on New Hope Road will close to replace two piling. The Bridge has been approved to undergo repairs with MDOT later in the Spring. The first closing will replace piling that was discovered during the annual inspection.

 

Highway 472 will close to replace 1 piling discovered during inspection.

 

The board approved to change the bridges on Deer Camp Road and Davis Sherman Road replacing them with tank car culverts and remove them from the bridge inspection list moving forward. The bridges will close for the repairs and reopen as quick as work is completed.

 

Charlie Welch advised the renovation at the Courthouse with the window project is nearing completion date. The Trustee Hall is nearing a completion date with siding and paint beginning.
