JACKSON, Miss. – The newly released Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) 2018-19 Superintendent’s Annual Report shows how student achievement in Mississippi has reached an all-time high. View the report online at mdek12.org/superintendent2019.

The report provides details about how Mississippi’s commitment to higher academic standards has made the state a national leader in education. Along with rising student proficiency levels on state assessments, Mississippi has achieved the No. 1 spot in the nation for gains on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card.

“I am incredibly proud of our public schools and am excited to share the story of their historic achievements,” said Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education. “Mississippi students are making faster progress than nearly every other state in the nation because we raised expectations for what they can accomplish. Teachers, school leaders, parents and students are to be commended for their hard work and commitment to excellence.”

The Mississippi State Board of Education’s and MDE’s priorities for 2020 and beyond include maintaining high academic standards that will prepare all students for college and careers, strengthening the state’s early childhood education infrastructure, continuing to help make teachers and school leaders more effective, making data-driven decisions to raise student achievement and close achievement gaps, and improving low-performing schools.
