The Magee Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is in full swing, and on Monday, June 13, 2016, parents and kids were entertained and educated by “The Snake Man,” Terry Vandeventer.
Vandeventer, who is Mississippi’s most widely recognized wildlife personality, serves as the Herpetology Field Associate with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.
During the program at the library, Vandeventer introduced kids to various snakes who are all indigenous to the state of Mississippi. He took the opportunity to teach those in attendance about the role snakes play in our ecosystems, as well as the best way to react when one sees a snake.
Ask any kid in attendance, and he will tell you, “Take two steps back then walk away.”
Some of the snakes introduced to the kids at the program included a corn snake, a king snake, a chicken or rat snake, a mud snake, and an indigo snake named Violet.
