A new long-term study of 100,000 U.S. adults has reinforced the link between the regular consumption of sugary drinks and death from heart disease or stroke.

The new Harvard School of Public Health study found that regularly consuming two or more sugar-sweetened sodas, sports drinks or juices was linked to a 31 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The risk of death continued to increase sharply with each additional sweetened drink per day. Artificially sweetened drinks showed no such increased risk.

High in both sugar and calories, sweetened drinks have previously been linked with weight gain, diabetes and heart disease.
