Statement on income tax reform

RIDGELAND, Miss. – Today, the House of Representatives introduced legislation that would alleviate the state income tax burden for many families. House Bill 1439 cleared the Ways and Means committee and heads to the full House floor for action.

While not fully eliminating the income tax, the proposal would increase the personal exemption to $47,700 and the married exemption to $95,400.

“While we are encouraged by the leadership shown in the Mississippi House to return dollars to the pockets of hardworking families, we continue to believe there is a path to eliminate completely the income tax on all Mississippians that will lead to more economic opportunities and better jobs,” said Russ Latino, president of Empower Mississippi. “We look forward to working with lawmakers to ensure reforms passed position us for long-term success.”

Empower Mississippi has led in providing research and advocacy demonstrating both the benefits and the path to eliminating the income tax, including:

  • How this is Mississippi’s moment to set audacious goals
  • What a shift to consumption taxes would mean
  • How we can fund government without income taxes
  • How income tax-free states have surpassed Mississippi across several key indicators

While I applaud the legislature for this attempt at reducing the tax burden of individuals I believe the better plan would be to eliminate the tax on groceries! The sales tax on groceries is punitive on the poorest of our population. The concept of adding7% to the basic necessities of survival, food, is downright mean! If the legislature wants to help ALL MISSISSIPPIANS then eliminate or at least reduce the sales tax on groceries!!
