Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael Guest released the following statement tonight after the failure of President Biden to address his open border polices and rise of violent crime and failure of his Administration to secure the border.

Watch Video of Statement here.

“President Biden in addressing the nation tonight continued to offer excuses on the top issue facing America today, illegal immigration. Since President Biden took office, there have been nearly 9 million illegal crossings into the United States, which is three times the number of people who live in Mississippi.

“We see an alarming increase in violent crime caused by those who have entered illegally.  Murder, robbery, assault, and rape committed by illegal aliens are now routinely on the nightly news. Illegal drugs continue to flow across the border into our communities killing young Americans.  Under President Biden, the leading cause of death for Americans 18-45 is drug overdose.

“Mr. President, we are tired of your excuses and failed policies.  It is past time that you act and put America first.  Mr. President, close the border.”

Background:

Over 8.7 million people have illegally crossed into the United States since Biden took office in 2021. This is nearly 3 times the number of people who live in Mississippi.

In 2023 nearly 300,000 people illegally crossed into the borders of European countries, and in December of 2023 alone more than 300,000 people crossed the Southwest border of the United States. More illegal immigrants crossed the Southwest border in one month than crossed into Europe in the entire year of 2023.

The number one issue facing Americans today is immigration and border policy. President Biden is 33 points underwater for his handling of immigration and failed border policies.

Since October 2023, there have been over 1 million illegal immigrant encounters.

January was the 35th straight month where monthly illegal immigrant encounters have been higher than even the highest month seen under President Trump. Additionally, 28 percent of Americans think immigration has become the number one issue Americans are concerned about – the highest in Gallop polling history.

In January 2024, nine more individuals whose names appear on the terrorist watchlist were stopped trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border between ports of entry. Since FY21, 340 of these individuals have attempted to cross our Southwest border illegally.

So far this fiscal year, CBP has arrested 11,958 aliens with criminal convictions nationwide, including 157 known gang members, 24 of those being MS-13 members.

Last month, encounters along the busiest sector of the Northern border, the Swanton Sector, increased 59 percent compared to the previous January and over 2,000 percent compared to January FY22.

According to Monmouth University Poll released at the end of February, 6 in 10 see illegal immigration as a very serious problem.
