WHO:           The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).

WHAT:         Traffic update.

WHEN:         Pending final inspection, the bridge is tentatively expected reopen by Tuesday, May 27.

WHERE:       SR 28 over the Pearl River at the Copiah/Simpson County line.

WHY:            The 80-year-old steel truss bridge was struck last year by an over-height vehicle traveling westbound that caused significant structural damage, forcing MDOT officials to immediately close and repair the bridge. Due to the large and complex design of the bridge, a significant amount of preliminary engineering work was completed before repairs began, including five shoring points that were designed and approved after the bridge was struck.

HOW:           “I applaud our dedicated district and bridge engineers for their careful review, design and execution of this critical bridge repair,” said Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons. “As Commissioner, I appreciate the patience of surrounding businesses and drivers in the area for allowing us to get this assessment and repair process completed as quickly and safely as possible.”

Motorists should pay close attention to posted signage until the bridge is open for travel. Stay updated on the reopening at MDOTtraffic.com, download the MDOT Traffic mobile app, and follow @MississippiDOT on Facebook and X.
