Sport Management CEO Shares Leadership Insights with USM Students

Steve Cannon, CEO of AMB Group, LLC, shared his leadership philosophy and techniques with business students earlier this month as part of the Inspired Leaders series coordinated by the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi.

From creating a compelling vision, setting high standards, and being cordial to set the example, being present, and never undermining a person’s dignity, Cannon shared insightful experiences from his career and life in a way that college students could appreciate and emulate.

“We’re very fortunate to have one of the country’s leading CEO’s speak to our campus community,” said Dr. Stacey A. Hall, Chair & Associate Professor in the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, & Sport Management. “Mr. Cannon’s experience spearheading global brands such as Mercedes-Benz USA and the AMB Group, was valuable and insightful as he shared his key leadership values with the audience. His presentation was well received by our students who aspire to be business and sport industry leaders.”

In his duties with AMB Group, Cannon oversees the company’s for-profit businesses: the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons; Atlanta United of Major League Soccer; Atlanta Falcons Stadium Company; PGA TOUR Superstore; and the Mountain Sky Guest Ranch. Prior to joining AMB Group, Cannon served as president and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz USA and led operations that generated record sales with annual revenues exceeding $20 billion.

Dr. Faye Gilbert, Dean of the College of Business at USM, notes that the Inspired Leaders series provides the University community with an opportunity to meet five CEOs this year while introducing them to USM and the Pine Belt area.

“The goal is for each CEO to share with us ways they inspire their companies as well as the things that inspire them in their leadership,” said Gilbert. “Students have the opportunity to talk with these CEOs in an informal setting, as well as in a class. It is very exciting to be able to have students study these companies and then have these leaders visit with them in person.”

The Inspired Leaders series is sponsored by Montague, Pittman, Varnado & Walter, P.A. and SouthGroup Insurance Services to honor the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund: www.johnnymac.org.
