Mayor Mark Grubbs called the May 5, 2026, meeting of the Magee Board of Aldermen to order. Jack Robinson opened the meeting with prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. All aldermen were present.

The board approved the agenda, previous meeting minutes, and claims docket.

During the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Grubbs praised Christian Carrico for his vision and dedication to the newly opened City Park of Magee. Grubbs noted Carrico also played a key role in the development of the city’s previous park facilities.

The mayor announced the Magee Carnival will open May 7, 2026, behind the Shoe Store and near the post office.

The Magee Preservation Committee submitted the name of Zoning Director Evan Jones to fill a vacancy on the Preservation Board. The board approved the recommendation, and Jones will begin serving immediately.

There was no old business discussed.

Under new business, Mayor Grubbs informed the board that Wenger Lawn Service had withdrawn from the mowing contract at McNair Springs. Craig Magee of Magee Lawn Service, the next lowest bidder, agreed to assume the contract beginning this month.

Mayor Grubbs also presented a resolution recognizing May 10-16, 2026, as Food Allergy Awareness Week. The resolution was approved by the board.

Forrest Dungan of ClearPoint Engineers provided updates on several ongoing city projects. He reported the NRCS-EWP erosion project is currently in the design phase. The city’s Water Pumping Ordinance is still under evaluation in connection with FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) regulations.

Dungan stated the MCWI infrastructure project was completed on time and within budget, totaling more than $2 million in infrastructure improvements. He also reported the draft Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan for the Magee Airport Industrial site has been completed.

Additional updates included the Community Development Block Grant Program, where CMPDD is coordinating a resident survey with the city, and progress on both water and sewer improvement projects. Dungan noted the loan application for water improvements has been submitted, while revisions to sewer facility plans are currently being addressed.

The board approved naming Mayor Grubbs as the city’s authorized representative for the Clean Water Pollution Control revolving loan-funded program and authorized submission of the loan application.

Police Chief Denis Borges discussed applying for a federal grant totaling approximately $400,000 through the BJA FY25 Rural Law Enforcement Violent Crime Reduction Initiative. No matching funds would be required. The matter was tabled for further review.

The board approved the resignation of Investigator Rebecca D. Bounds, effective May 13, 2026. Chief Borges also requested an executive session.

Special event applications were approved for America’s 250 National Day of Prayer scheduled for May 17, 2026, and the Rock the Block Reunion planned for May 30, 2026.

Public Works Director Tim Bray reported the elevated water tank located behind Delta Ready Mix remains offline but is expected to return to service May 6, 2026. Bray also updated the board on continued work involving sewer lines, culverts, ditches, curbs, and storm debris cleanup. Approximately 10 tons of asphalt were distributed throughout the city for repairs. He also reported Well #6 is back operational after possibly being struck by lightning.

Parks and Recreation Director Jimmy Zilla was unable to attend the meeting due to duties at the Sportsplex. Mayor Grubbs commended Zilla, the Parks and Recreation staff, and city crews for their efforts in preparation for the ribbon cutting at the City Park of Magee.

Alderman Alyson Berch raised concerns regarding residents’ inability to hear weather sirens in some areas of the city. John Hosey with Emergency Management Services explained that tower placement and tree coverage continue to create challenges. Hosey stated he would explore the possibility of relocating some towers if feasible.

The meeting was then adjourned into executive session.
