Governor Tate Reeves has officially announced the date and time of the 2025 Special Legislative Session! Lawmakers will return to Jackson on Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. to pass a budget for State Fiscal Year 2026.
The legislature concluded the 2025 legislative session without passing a budget. This means that government services and state agencies did not receive funding for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2025.
Since each agency has its own appropriation bill, many individual bills will be considered during the special session. One we’ll be watching closely is the appropriation to the Mississippi Department of Education, through which lawmakers provide funding for the state’s Education Scholarship Account (ESA). This program, designed to serve students with special needs, currently has a waiting list of more than 150 students. Some students have waited for years to participate. We hope lawmakers will increase funding for the program by approximately $2 million to ensure every student on the waiting list can access the program.
Be sure to reach out to your lawmaker and ask them to fully fund the ESA program for these special needs students. Click the link below to do so now – it’s quick and easy!
