Special Katrina Project Performances Planned in August
As the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina nears, a decade-old play based upon the devastating storm will make a revival during special performances next month in Hattiesburg and Ocean Springs, Miss.
“The Katrina Project: Hell and High Water,” written by University of Southern Mississippi alum Michael Marks, will return to the stage on Aug. 7-9 at the Hattiesburg High School auditorium and Aug. 16 at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs. Just Over the Rainbow Theatre and Hattiesburg Public Schools are jointly producing the performances.
Based on actual interviews, collected stories and found texts, the play provides a voice to the greatest natural disaster in U.S. recorded history. More than 1,800 people died as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina which ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the New Orleans area on Aug. 29, 2005.
American Idol finalist and Miss Mississippi 2014 Jasmine Murray is part of the stellar cast that will help the audience experience the devastation, heartbreak, anger and, ultimately, the hope of those affected by the deadly storm.
The original production toured the country in 2005 and enjoyed a command performance for Congress in Washington, D.C. To date, the benefit production has raised more than $300,000 in relief monies for disaster victims through worldwide performances.
