Southern Miss To Team Up with Local Groups for 9/11 Service Projects
The Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) at The University of Southern Mississippi will join several organizations throughout the Pine Belt to participate in #WeAreHattie — a citywide community service and outreach project set for Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10.
Service projects will be conducted throughout the community in conjunction with the 9/11 National Day of Service. Volunteer Hattiesburg at United Way of Southeast Mississippi will be coordinating volunteer projects for community members through their site here.
The Southern Miss CCCE will be coordinating projects for University students. USM affiliates may sign up to volunteer here. Weekend activities will culminate at the City’s 9/11 Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the #1 Fire Station on Main Street.
“The purpose of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is to mobilize more Americans to engage in service and remembrance activities that meet vital community needs and honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, or those who rose in service as a result of that tragedy,” says Christy Arrazattee, director of USM’s CCCE.
Business, schools, groups, churches, or individuals are encouraged to sign up to volunteer with the event through Volunteer Hattiesburg.
“There is something for everyone,” says Elizabeth Winton, director of Volunteer Hattiesburg. “Sign up through GiveGab.com or call Volunteer Hattiesburg to see what is available. We have opportunities ranging from helping out at the animal shelter to repairing and restocking the free libraries around town.”
People may also choose to create their own opportunities and make a pledge of service through Twitter or Facebook at #WeAreHattie. No effort is too small – visit an elderly neighbor, pick up litter, host a school supply drive, or bake cookies for first responders.
The #WeAreHattie initiative recognizes that Hattiesburg is a community that comes together in good times and bad. Whether united against the forces of nature or showing solidarity in the face of great loss, Hattiesburg residents have shown time and time again that they put aside differences to work toward the same goal.
