Southern Miss Seeking Applicants for High School Journalism Workshop

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism is accepting applications for the “Remembering Hurricane Katrina” Multimedia High School Journalism Workshop, which will be held on the Hattiesburg campus June 14-21.
Selected participants will study under professional journalists and the Southern Miss journalism faculty. They will meet with newsmakers and cover timely stories. Participants will learn how to produce television and radio newscasts, a newspaper and a website.
The students’ news coverage will focus on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast in August 2005. Students will hear from and interview journalists who covered the storm and its aftermath as well as residents who lived through the storm and learned to adapt to a post-Katrina world.
Students currently in grades 10-12 at Mississippi high schools are eligible to apply. The application deadline is May 9.

“I know I am excited to be able offer Mississippi high school students the opportunity to not only learn the ropes of the journalism industry, but also to cover such an important event in Mississippi and United States history,” said workshop director and Southern Miss instructor Robert Byrd. “So many people in our state still feel the sting of Hurricane Katrina. This commemoration gives them the chance to tell their story, and it gives our participants a chance to give those stories wings.”
The workshop is free to selected students in large part due to a grant from the Dow Jones News Fund. This year’s workshop marks the fourth of its kind at Southern Miss.

Students with an interest in producing multimedia stories about multicultural issues are especially encouraged to apply.
Applications and additional information about the workshop can be found at the School of Mass Communication and Journalism website at https://www.usm.edu/mcj or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/USMmultimediaworkshop.

For more information, contact Byrd at robert.d.byrd@usm.edu or call 601.266.6036.

CUTLINE: Participants from the 2014 Remembering “Freedom Summer” Multimedia Journalism Workshop interview Peggy Jean Connor about her experiences during the Civil Rights Movement. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2015 Remembering Hurricane Katrina Multimedia Journalism Workshop.
