Southern Miss Receives Purple Heart University Designation
The national branch of the Military Order of the Purple Heart has awarded The University of Southern Mississippi its “Purple Heart University” designation. The designation signifies the University’s commitment and service to student-veterans wounded in combat while serving in the military and who now attend Southern Miss.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart, chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1958, is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat.
The recognition is yet another affirmation of USM’s support of student-veterans and their families, said retired Army Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond, director of veteran and military student services at Southern Miss and head of its Center for Military Veterans, Service Members, and Families.
“We’re honored to be considered worthy of such special recognition by the Military Order of the Purple Heart as we continue to meet the needs of our veterans, those currently serving our nation and their wonderful families,” Hammond said.
Last year Victory Media Inc., a veteran-owned ratings entity, designated the University as a “Military Friendly School.” That accolade followed the establishment of an accelerated program for veterans with medical service training to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Southern Miss’s Gulf Park campus.
