The Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus is recruiting new members for TRIAD AmeriCorps. Training, Resources and Information for the Advancement of Disability (TRIAD) Service AmeriCorps is an inclusive service program funded through Volunteer Mississippi.
At Southern Miss, the TRIAD AmeriCorps service program focuses on providing health-related education to improve lifestyle changes for economically disadvantaged youth with disabilities. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, TRIAD serves partnering school districts in Harrison and Hancock counties.
“In our program, we provide health and wellness education to students with disabilities that include physical and art activities and other community service activities,” said Devin Bellman, TRIAD AmeriCorps site supervisor. “The people we work with are amazing.”
As a member of TRIAD AmeriCorps, prospective members are required to complete a specified number of community service hours prior to receiving an education award. Community service hours may be carried out on a part-time or minimum-time basis during the spring and fall semesters, or members may choose to opt for a summer position. For their service, members can earn living stipends and/or education awards.
Members will also receive professional development training, which will cover resume building, interview skills, computer literacy skills and leadership skills. Participants do not have to be currently enrolled students at Southern Miss to apply to become a member of TRIAD AmeriCorps.
To learn more about TRIAD AmeriCorps, interested individuals may attend a recruiting event at Gulf Park on one of the following days: Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 9, March 23, April 6 and April 20. Each event will take place at 12:15 p.m. on Eagle Plaza next to Hardy Hall.
