Southern Miss Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program Gets High Ranking
The University of Southern Mississippi’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology has been ranked among the nation’s Top 50 graduate programs by the resource guide CounselingPsychology.org. The Southern Miss program stands at No. 13 in the national rankings.
CounselingPsychology.org carefully selected the top 50 programs of 220 qualified offerings using various parameters, chief among those the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) pass rates of the students completing the programs.
“We could not be more proud of the faculty, support staff, and students of our Clinical Psychology program,” said Dr. Joe Olmi, chair of the Southern Miss Department of Psychology. “The faculty are second to none. Our EPPP pass rate is largely attributed to the skill and expertise of all those within the Program. I am not surprised at all with the ranking.”
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Ph.D. program in clinical psychology has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation since 1979.
The Southern Miss program’s three broad goals are to train scientist-practitioners who will:
Have broad knowledge of scientific psychology and psychological research methods.
Be capable of contributing to current knowledge in clinical psychology.
Provide evidence-based clinical services that are consistent with ethical and professional standards.
Clinical psychology is a career path for people who wish to work with patients, in diagnosis and treatment and in researching effectiveness of treatments (depending on which clinical path one takes). In spring 2014, a survey revealed over 100,000 professionals presently working in clinical psychology in the USA; this number is growing every year.
