Thursday, August 5, 2021, I received a call from a concerned parent about a lack of entertainment for teens in our county.  I don’t feel anyone will disagree with her feelings.

Many suggestions can be made…but what is really feasible ?  Sure a bowling alley would be fantastic.  According to Profitablebenture.com, a rough estimate to build a bowling alley is $650,000.  If you know someone who would make that investment in Simpson County, let me know.

The cost to build a movie theater is approximately $1,842.00 (rumen.com/model.com). The price is based on a 12000 square foot building.  (Maybe we could handle a smaller theater!)

With these figures in mind, let’s look at things that might be within our reach.

Churches:  I feel our churches are already doing a great job filling the need for clean fun in our county…but maybe more weekend activities could be incorporated into programs.

Cities/Towns:  Does our city have a responsibility to provide entertainment for youth?  Magee is blessed with a great Sportsplex…but if you don’t play “ball” where are you left…out of luck!

City of Magee

Restaurants:  We are in pretty good shape with eating places.

Schools:  During school, activities are in full swing which helps with something to do!

Magee Football

The carnival sponsored by the Chamber a few months ago was well attended by all ages.  Perhaps, we could have a carnival once a quarter.

I need your suggestions!  What do you feel we can do for our young people?

Covid may affect anything for a while. I read about towns in other areas that have movie nights in the outdoors. I know Clinton MS has this on the brick streets. Would youth have an interest in a summer theater camp and a presentation before school begins? What about some painting classes or a paint night? Would Wyatt Waters be interested in teaching watercolor class and could we afford him? What about cooking demonstrations geared for tailgating foods? Just random thoughts. I hope kids from the county might also be included for a fee.
