Treasurer Lynn Fitch and College Savings Mississippi to Host Scholarship Contests
at State Baseball Championships
Six Participants to Win $529 MACS Scholarships

Jackson, MS. Treasurer Lynn Fitch and College Savings Mississippi are hosting another scholarship opportunity, “Race to College,” at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) State Baseball Championships held at Trustmark Park on May 19-20, 2016.

“Our partnership with the MHSAA is just one of the ways we engage the community and encourage families to be prepared for the rising cost of college,” said Treasurer Fitch. “When families are proactive about their child’s future and take that step to prepare, they are not only helping themselves, they’re also boosting the economic future of our state.

“We are looking forward to awarding six families a $529 Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) Plan scholarship during the State Baseball Championships,” Treasurer Fitch continued. “Our scholarship opportunity, in the form of a relay race, is a great visual displaying the many steps needed to get your child to college. My hope is this opens a lot of parents’ eyes to the process and motivates them to think about their family’s future.”

College Savings Mississippi will host a “Race to College” relay during each of the six games on May 19-20, 2016. Two contestants will be randomly chosen from entrants to participate at each race. Each contestant will have to race to designated stations to submit a mock MACS/MPACT application, deposit funds into the 529 account, put on a backpack to go to college, and finally receive a cap and gown to run back to the starting line. The first to finish in each relay will win a $529 MACS scholarship.

College Savings Mississippi is a division of the State Treasurer’s Office and operates the two state-sponsored 529 college savings plans, MACS and MPACT (Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition).
